Book prizes for Students and Sponsoring Teachers

The the top four winning students in our contest, and the teachers who sponsored them, will all receive copies of both of these books.
Thanks to a generous pledge from The New Press, we are pleased to announce that the top four students and their sponsoring teachers will receive copies of The Devil in Dover; An Insider's Story of Dogma vs. Darwin in Small Town America, by Laurie Lebo. Ms. Lebo worked as the Education Reporter for the York Daily Record and followed the Kitzmiller vs. Dover Area School District "Intelligent Design" trial on a daily basis. Her account is gripping and masterfully written.
Carl Zimmer is easily one of the finest science writers of our times - you may have seen his articles in The New York Times, National Geographic, Scientific American and elsewhere. His six science books have consistently earned high praise, and thanks to the generosity of Pantheon, our top four students and their sponsoring teachers will each receive a copy of Microcosm: E. coli and the New Science of Life. This is a highly readable and engaging book that takes the reader on an extraordinary and illuminating journey.

Additional Incentives for Sponsoring Teachers

At the Alliance for Science, we understand that being a high school science teacher is a tough job, and helping students with a contest like this can be a lot of extra work. We show our appreciation by offering these incentives for the teachers who sponsor the winning students:
CASH PRIZES.  The teacher of the first place essay winning student will receive a check for $150.00. Second place is good for $100.00. These prizes are intended to help teachers buy teaching materials and supplies for their classrooms.
Books and DVDs by Ken Miller:  Teachers sponsoring the top four students will each receive a copy of Only a Theory: Evolution and the Battle for America's Soul and Finding Darwin's God, both by Professor Ken Miller. Ken Miller has long been a prominent scientist, educator, and advocate for evolutionary science, and appeared as an expert witness for the plaintiffs in the Kitzmiller versus Dover Area School District trial in 2005.
