To a great extent, the scientific community has responded in a positive and active manner in their opposition to the introduction of HB 1228 and HB 1531 into the MD State Legislature. However, the extent of the response has also exposed some weaknesses in the pro-evolution/pro-science forces. We are not in the position to readily bring religious and non-science based people into this discussion in a pro-science manner. It is the opinion of the Alliance for Science that we need to form a grassroots organization encompassing Northern VA, MD and DC whose goal will be to unite all sectors of our society in the support of science.
We invite all interested people to join us on March 30 to discuss the following issues:
1. What are the lessons of HB 1228 and HB 1531
2. The success of the Clergy Project’s (a member of the AfS) “Darwin Sunday” and letter campaign and how we can translate that to the Capital Area
3. Should we form a Capital Area Citizens for Science and what should it do?
Directions to the meeting
Seekers Church is barely within DC and it is 100 yards from the main entrance to the Takoma Metro Station on the Red Line. As you come out of the main entrance go straight ahead and you will see Seekers Church on your right. There is limited parking behind Seekers and, since there will be two other events in Seekers Church that evening it is likely that you will need to park on the street or in the Metro Parking Lot. The Parking Lot entrance is on Eastern Avenue which dead ends into Carroll Street.
The door from the Seekers Parking lot will be open. If you enter that way go straight up the hall and the dining room is on the right. If you walk up to the main entrance on Carroll Street someone will probably be there to greet you. If you are let in that way you need to go up stairs, go past the worship space (which will be hosting a Yogarhythimics activity) and the Dining Room will be on your left.
