Why Support Evolution?

We value education. We respect nature. We desire progress and technological advancement. We value knowledge, and learning for learning’s sake. We wish to leave future generations a better world than the one we inhabit.

These values can only be realized by teaching our children the best that science has to offer. That means teaching them about the history of life on earth, about how so much biological diversity came to be. How species compete, cooperate, and adapt. The consequences of that adaptation for other species. That means teaching them the theory of evolution.

Evolution is the unifying principle of biology. It provides a framework for how life diversified into the forms we see today. The evidence in support of evolution is vast and varied, supported by literally tens of thousands of laboratory studies, and countless observations in the wild. The theory has come a long way since Darwin’s 1859 publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, and has only gotten stronger at every step. Yet some wish to undermine the teaching of biology’s most cherished theory based upon ideology and superstition, not sound science. They seek to use politics instead of experimentation to undermine evolution’s rightfully earned place as the foundation of modern biology.

Currently, these unscientific political groups are attempting to use school boards and legislatures to manufacture “controversies” surrounding evolution, by altering curricula to include unscientific concepts like Intelligent Design Creationism and Young Earth Creationism, or encouraging the teaching of false “problems with evolution”. Even when these groups lose, they win, because false controversies and negative media attention encourage teachers to “water down”— or ignore altogether— the allegedly controversial material.

In addition to our national goals, our group provides a resource for Virginians and DC area citizens who support, via advocacy and education, the teaching of sound science in our public schools. We believe our students should be taught the best science has to offer, unhindered by sectarian dogma.
